Respiratory Pathogen Panel PCR Ordering Criteria Update

Key update

The Respiratory Pathogen Panel PCR (LAB3359) detects several viral and bacterial pathogens, however, is often overutilized and rarely impacts patient management. To promote evidence-based stewardship, reduce overutilization, and encourage more targeted molecular testing, effective September 2, 2026 clinicians must provide a clinical indication when ordering the Respiratory Pathogen Panel PCR in Epic.

 When to order

This panel is intended for:

  • Patients with severe CAP requiring admission to the ICU
  • Immunocompromised patients
  • Test is required for isolation determination

 When not to order

This panel should not be ordered unless one or more of the criteria listed above are met. For patients not meeting these criteria, consider targeted testing based on seasonal and local prevalence: SARS-CoV-2, Influenza A/B, RSV, etc.

Order changes

  • Clinicians will need to select an indication to order this test by selecting from the options listed.
  • Panel organisms will be listed in the order process instructions to support appropriate test selection.
  • Previous results for SARS-CoV-2, Flu A/B, and RSV ordered within the same encounter will be displayed at the time of ordering.
  • Repeat Respiratory Pathogen Panel PCR tests ordered within 7 days will be autocanceled.
