If your patient is experiencing symptoms and requires a Covid test, please choose one of the options below:

Collect the specimen in your office and send the specimen to any Corewell Health Laboratory or with your Corewell Health Courier, if available.

• Please be sure to place a collected order in Epic or your EMR, or include a paper order with the specimen.

• Please make sure the specimen is labeled with 2 patient identifiers, date and time of collection, and source (nasopharyngeal or nares)

For all other options please visit: Corewell Health COVID-19 screening and testing

NOTE: Walk-in COVID-19 testing is not available at any of our sites, including emergency departments, urgent care locations or walk-in clinics. Testing is available to registered patients who are seeking medical treatment.

Measles Ordering and Collecting Specimens

With several suspected cases of measles within Michigan, we thought it would be an excellent time to highlight Corewell Health West’s guidance on testing suspected patients. Specimens are sent to a reference lab for testing, which must be coordinated with local public health departments. Typically an upper-respiratory swab (throat or nasopharyngeal)  is collected for PCR testing in addition to a serum for measles IgM if collection is possible.

  • Patients should not be directed to a Corewell Health Laboratory or other healthcare facility for serum collection if patient is within 4 days after the onset of rash (with onset of rash considered to be Day 0). If Day 5 of rash or later, immunocompetent patients are no longer considered contagious and may be sent to a laboratory for a serum draw.
  • Corewell Health Providers:
    • Please reach out to Corewell Health Infection Prevention (IP) via Perfect Serve to make them aware of the situation.
    • Corewell Health Infection Prevention will contact the appropriate county.
  • Non-Corewell Health Facilities:
    • The provider’s office must coordinate with the county health department that the patient lives in to obtain permission to send measles testing.
    • Visit the following link for county health department contact information: Slide 1 (michigan.gov)
      • The county will coordinate with MDHHS for testing permission.

The preferred testing specimen is a throat or nasopharyngeal swab collected in office. Corewell Health Laboratories do not collect swabs.

For further collection and ordering instructions, please visit: Measles PCR – Laboratory Test Catalog | West

Any additional questions or concerns, please use the contact us link above or reach out to your local health department.

Lab Specimen Drop Off Policy Change

Effective Tuesday, February 20, 2024, the policy for home collected specimen drop offs for Outpatient Laboratories (“draw sites”) has been updated.

For all Corewell Health West Michigan locations: after registration, patients or their designated person will verify the specimen at the laboratory. Laboratory team members will verify the specimen is properly labeled and ensure they have everything needed to be able to test the specimen before the patient or their designated person leaves the building. This does not include specimens collected by a home health nurse or provider.

This will standardize our patient flow when arriving with a home collected specimen and will reduce the need for recollection due to missing information or improper collection.

When specimen collection orders are placed, please notify patients of the change to this process.

Lab Specimen Label Printing Update for Corewell Health Epic Users

On 10/31/23, a change was made to lab specimen labels, which included a patient’s preferred name on the label, if it is documented in Epic. This highlighted a change in the names of label types seen by staff when reprinting specimen labels in Epic. Due to a mix of Intermec and Zebra printers across the entire Corewell Health system, defaults needed to be removed from Epic build to account for these differences. Users will now be required to manually choose the correct label type when reprinting labels. The Collection Activity behavior should remain the same. Continue Reading

Outpatient Lab Draw Site Updates

Effective Monday, October 2, 2023, the Outpatient Lab Draw Sites in Kent, Ottawa, and Muskegon counties (excluding the Zeeland Hospital and Gerber Hospital sites) will begin a new process for walk-in patients.

Registration staff will begin informing the patient of their wait times based on the scheduling template available for that site for that day. This will allow the patient to make an informed decision on whether to wait, come back at a later time, or schedule an appointment time that works best for them. Patients choosing to schedule, may schedule for any available sites, times and dates in MyChart, or they may schedule with the registrar for the next 24-48 hours.  (Note: lab staff does not have the ability to schedule patients.)

Additionally, at this time, Blodgett Outpatient Lab is temporarily closed until further notice. Sites closest to Blodgett are the Integrated Care Campus at 426 Michigan St NE, 4100 Lake Drive, and Integrated Care Campus at 2750 East Beltline, or patients may visit Find a Doctor | Corewell Health to find a lab location nearest to them.

Update: 35 Michigan Outpatient Draw Site

Effective July 1, 2023, the Corewell Health Outpatient Laboratory at 35 Michigan will restrict our services to pediatric patients.

This change will create an exceptional experience for our smallest patients by decreasing wait times, decompressing the waiting room, and allowing the team to focus on the pediatric experience. There will be exceptions such as “adult” patients followed by the pediatric clinics or parents of children who are also being drawn. We will also continue to see adult patients scheduled by practices located in 25/35 Michigan. Special testing such as Ammonia, Cryoglobulin, Venous Blood Gas, Platelet Aggregation, Cold Agglutinin Titer, Carboxyhemoglobin, Lactic Acid, Lactate/Pyruvate Ratio, Verify Now may still be collected at this site as well.

Alternative options for patients no longer able to be drawn at 35 MI Lab can be found here: Lab Locations. The nearest location is Butterworth Outpatient Lab, located just off the main Butterworth lobby.
