Test Updates: Encephalopathy and Protein Electrophoresis

Effective July 8, 2026, Protein Electrophoresis, CSF and Serum and Encephalitis Antibody Evaluation will be sent to Quest Diagnostics.


 

Effective July 8, 2026, the Protein Electrophoresis, CSF and Serum will no longer be performed in-house.  The new panel will now be sent to Quest Diagnostics.

Specimen Collection Criteria
  • Cerebrospinal Fluid: 3.0 mL CSF in a sterile collection container. (Minimum: 1.5 mL)
  • Blood: One Gold-top SST tube or one plain Red-top tube. (Minimum: 1.0 mL)
Physician Office/Draw Site Specimen  Preparation Let blood specimen clot 30-60 minutes then centrifuge to separate serum from cells within two hours of collection. Transfer serum to a plastic transport tube and refrigerate (2-8°C or 36-46°F). Maintain CSF refrigerated prior to transport.
Specimen Preparation for Courier Transport Transport: 3.0 mL CSF and 2.0 mL serum, refrigerated (2-8°C or 36-46°F). (Minimum: 1.5 mL CSF and 1.0 mL serum)
Rejection Criteria Hemolysis • Received room temperature • Xanthochromia • RBCs
